Last September I visited Full Sail University, the college where I got my (expensive) degree. I was there to watch my brother graduate, but talked to the ever-helpful Rob Coble about speaking to the students. Rob was a great source of help when I graduated and was first applying for jobs. He helped improve my resume, helped grab great leads, and was there to consult on every step of the process. So when Rob asked if I'd speak to one of the classes nearing graduation I happily obliged. As I answered their questions I noticed there was a very common theme (besides the people who found my twitter, blog, Facebook, etcetera and asked me creepy questions.) All the students were concerned with landing that first job.

It's a common concern amongst grads. There was an article in The Onion joking about grads cryogenically freezing themselves until the job market got better. Recent news of massive layouts for game devs and entire studios closing shop definitely doesn't help the perception that the game industry is beyond capacity right now. You know what, though? There's always room for a competent programmer. Social gaming is booming. AAA games are requiring more and more talent to ship games on the same, old schedule. Someone needs to stay on board to get that DLC done!

The truth is only you can stand in your way. If you put in the effort, you'll do fine. All you need to do is get yourself together and be diligent. Most of the advice that I had for the students was one, simple tidbit. Know your stuff!
