Regular expressions are a powerful tool for matching, validating, and manipulating text. In the first article of this series, we looked at the elements and syntax of regular expressions and saw how you can use regular expressions to define templates to match any imaginable text element. In this second and final article, we'll take a tour of the .NET components that let you use regular expressions in your projects.

First, a little terminology. When you are applying a regular expression to an input string, you can be interested in two things: You may simply want to know whether the input string or any part of it matches the regular expression without needing to know the details. For example, when using a regular expression to validate a phone number you do not need to know the specific phone number, just that it matched the regular expression pattern. This is called a match.

You may need to know the details of the text that matched the regular expression--in other words, what specific text in the input string matched the regular expression. This is called a capture.

In .NET, regular expression support is provided by over half a dozen classes. Three of these classes, as described in Table 1, are used for the vast majority of tasks that involve regular expressions. The other classes are for advanced purposes and are beyond the scope of this article. These classes are all part of the System.Text.RegularExpressions namespace.
